Q&A 033 — Younger Days

Why the past sometimes feels warmer than the present

Why do I sometimes want
to go back to my younger days,

even though life is more stable now,
I know myself better,
and I’ve survived things back then
I wouldn’t want to repeat,

yet still,
the past feels lighter,
and the present feels heavier?

Is wanting to go back
a sign that something is wrong?

Or is this just
what happens as we get older?

Ossan’s answer

An ossan learns that
wanting to go back
is not really about age.

It is about weight.

When we were younger,
we had less to protect.

Less responsibility.
Less history.
Less proof to maintain.

The past feels light
not because it was easy,
but because consequences
had not fully arrived yet.

An ossan notices something else.

We don’t miss
who we were.

We miss
how little everything meant.

Fewer decisions felt final.
Fewer mistakes felt permanent.

Now, choices carry echoes.
And that weight makes nostalgia louder.

Wanting to go back
does not mean you failed.

It usually means
you are carrying something carefully.

And that is not weakness.
It is evidence of responsibility.
